We Stand with David Daleiden & Sandra Merritt

By Terrisa Bukovinac, president of Pro-Life Future San Francisco

Last Wednesday, members of the Center for Medical Progress, David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt, were arraigned in San Francisco at the Hall of Justice.  They are facing 15 indictments for possible illegal recording of their undercover videos – not the content itself, the recording of it.

Prior to their arrival, I was standing outside the hall with my standard sign I bring to all pro-life events in San Francisco, bearing the slogan for the organization in which I represent, Secular Pro-Life.  It reads “Call me an extremist, but I think dismemberment is wrong – Pro-Life Atheist”.

The very first person I encountered was Sandra herself!  She seemed in good spirits and was excited to see some support.  She wanted to know right away about the secular point of view and insisted we exchange numbers so that we could talk more about secular outreach! She explained that she was prepared to be taken into custody that morning and was ready for whatever happened.  We took a selfie together and I gave her a hug of support.

Then more of our group began to arrive.  We had about 10-15 young people holding pro-life signs in a matter of minutes on the steps of the hall.  Thanks to the efforts of SFLA’s Camille Rodriguez, we had attracted young people from all over California. Their signs read “PP buys Becerra”, a reference to the California Attorney General who has charged David and Sandra, and who has publicly accepted thousands of dollars in donations from Planned Parenthood.

Other signs included “Planned Parenthood Literally Sells Baby Parts” with a copy of the actual contract between PP Mar Monte and Stem Express. Also “We Stand with David”, “We Stand with Sandra”, and the ever popular “We are the pro-life generation”.  We had quite a presence by the time David arrived and he seemed optimistic about the day, despite the seriousness of it all.

Shortly after the check-in at 8:30, David was released and Sandra was taken into custody. David had been booked previously in Los Angeles and posted bail at that time.  The arraignment was set for 1:30PM that afternoon.  We agreed to reconvene at that time.

By 1:00 PM almost our entire initial group, including some additions, gathered again on the steps of the Hall to ensure a display of support for David as he arrived once again. We were quite the spectacle and I was happy with the turn-out.

We entered two separate courts where we were asked to proceed to another room.  Finally, the third being the charm, the arraignment began.  The courtroom was small, but we filled it completely.  It was a satisfying display of support.

Sandra’s counsel argued for her release based on the unlikelihood that she might flee.  He pointed out that she was faced with similar charges in Texas and flew to the state to face those charges.  She does not have a passport, the case is not new (dating back to 2015), and the fact that she is a grandmother living with her daughters were all highlighted by her attorney.  The Deputy District Attorney arguing on behalf of Attorney General Becerra argued that although Sandra was not a flight risk, there were 15 “victims” (meaning those individuals recorded without their consent-in public spaces!) bail should remain at $75,000.  The judge agreed with the Deputy District Attorney.

David and Sandra’s new hearing was set for June 8th, 2017.  Likely arguments will be heard at that time so mark your calendars now!

After the hearing Pro-Life Future of San Francisco, of which I am the President, arranged a press conference outside the hall.  Words were shared from David, myself, Jonathan Keller of California Family Council, as well as others.

Please continue to support David and Sandra by donating to their defense, and spreading the news that they are Innocent and Planned Parenthood and their paid-for-prosecutors are guilty!

Why pro-lifers are so focused on defunding Planned Parenthood

By Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America

“Why are pro-lifers so focused on defunding Planned Parenthood?” This is the ever-present question we get asked multiple times a day from students on college campuses, sometimes even the ones who self-identify as pro-life, as well as legislators in state and federal government.

The pro-life movement is laser-focused on removing taxpayer money from Planned Parenthood for many reasons but the top one is that they are the nation’s largest abortion vendor, committing one-third of all abortions, which is equal to about 324,000 per year, or 888 per day.

There is a government law that prohibits federal funds from paying for most abortions called the Hyde Amendment, which is what Planned Parenthood points to when questioned on taxpayer money paying for abortions.

What the Hyde Amendment doesn’t prohibit federal funds from paying for are abortionist salaries for their non-abortion work, medical equipment, rent costs, advertising, staff salaries, or all the other expenses that come with running an abortion facility. It’s called fungibility, and it means that money is interchangeable and all goes into one big pot of funds, which is used to pay for everything Planned Parenthood needs to operate.

So while federal funds aren’t paying directly for abortion, they are paying for everything that enables Planned Parenthood to be the largest vendor of abortions in the country.

Read more at The Hill on why defunding Planned Parenthood can lead to the collapse of the entire abortion industry in the country.

Making Susan B. Anthony Proud

Pro-Life Future chapters recently took the opportunity of Susan B Anthony’s birthday to reach new audiences with the pro-life ethic and message: young adult peers and the often radically pro-abortion women calling themselves feminists.

“We wanted to celebrate Susan B.,” said one chapter member in Boston. “And celebrate life. And show that women’s rights and babies’ rights go hand-in-hand, aren’t in conflict. You can’t let someone kill a child without hurting the mother.”

What chapters also set out to do was extend awareness of Susan B. Anthony’s pro-life feminism. Her legacy was one of fighting for women’s rights; and since she was consistent, she never included abortion – then called “Restilism” – in her definition of rights.

“How can killing another human person be a right? It can’t.” SusanBAnthony

One of the things chapters did to raise awareness, and reach people not generally in touch with the idea of pro-life feminism, or Anthony’s authentic legacy, was flood social media with quotes, articles, Facebook posts and tweets, all relating back to the theme “#SusanBProLife” and “#ProLifeFeminist”.

In Boston, a quote from the 1872 Revolution (Anthony’s feminist newspaper), was circulated widely. It comes from the article entitled “Babies”, and reads:

We love babies. We confess it without a blush, and experience a reckless satisfaction in thinking what a number of gentlemen there will be amongst our readers upon whom this unqualified assertion will come as a shock. Yet who could pity a man who does not love babies? Let ANY man object to the little plump precursors of posterity, and he places you at once in possession of the exact breadth and dimension of his mind. Dr. Johnson used to proportion the value of a man’s intellect to the quality of his humour. We go further, and proportion a man’s intellect to the capacity of his sympathies. The test of a man’s sympathies is his love for babies. He that has not this love in his soul let him not be trusted.

“Loving babies has to mean loving women too,” said Anna, from the Lehigh Valley Chapter.

The Boston Events Coordinator, Stephanie, quoted from Susan B. herself, in her typically steely style: “I deplore the horrible crime of child-murder…We want prevention, not merely punishment. We must reach the root of the evil, and destroy it.”

“Some of what Anthony wrote sounded a little guilt-ridden – but I love how she addresses the fault of men in the issue. That men force women into a place where they feel obligated [to kill their child],” said Stephanie.SBA Day - 2 prolife feminists - lehigh (002)

Chapters, however, kept it both serious and light. Boston planned a pro-life feminist flash mob (unfortunately snowed out); in San Francisco, the team suggested wearing the red shawl (one thing Anthony was rarely seen without) and allowing it to spark conversation in the SF bar scene.

“Hosting this event gave me the opportunity to talk about Susan B. Anthony and her crucial role in the women’s suffrage movement,” said Terrisa, San Francisco PLF president. “So many of my friends were unaware of how instrumental she was in establishing equal rights for women under the law, and certainly did not know she was pro-life. It’s exciting to celebrate feminism in a way that’s totally inclusive and truly progressive. We must spread the word far and wide that the earliest feminists were consistent in their application of human rights and rightfully saw the lethal discrimination against the unborn to be in direct opposition to equality.”

Lehigh Valley also did a quick overview of how to write an op-ed, encouraging their members as well as all other chapters to send out pieces to their local or national newspapers this week, discussing Susan B. Anthony’s pro-life feminism.  Even Phoenix, a chapter just taking off, took the chance to talk #SusanBProLife to the Arizona community, using momentum from their amazing Defund Planned Parenthood Rally last weekend.

At the end of the day, it is almost impossible to gauge just how many the nationwide Pro-Life Future event reached. But what was clear was just how much creativity and energy the Pro-Life Future network of chapters has – their ability to reach new audiences, act on the fly, and use innovative strategies for making abortion unthinkable in their regions. This event built relationships within chapters; but it also built them between chapter members and fellow young adults who might never have spoken with a pro-lifer in any other context.

I think Susan B. Anthony – in her own dogged, creative, and consistent dedication to defending the most vulnerable as an activist and a woman – would have been proud.

Spreading Holiday Cheer the Pro-Life Way

By Meghan Meehan, president, Chicago Pro-Life Future

The holiday season is among us. Gifts are flowing and the snow drifts are growing. Worried about busy holiday schedules and no time to give back the gift of Christmas cheer? No worries, Chicago Pro-Life Future is here!

Every year we provide two amazing volunteer opportunities to give back to our community and demonstrate what a pro-life culture looks like.

Our first event was geared towards helping babies, and who doesn’t love helping PLF 3babies? The first Saturday in December is dedicated to my favorite event of the year, Christmas Caroling for Babies. We wear Santa hats, sing joyous Christmas tunes, and drink hot chocolate and enjoy homemade cookies outside of a busy abortion facility in Chicago. We bring peace, hope, and love to a place that desperately needs it.

Phil, a sidewalk counselor, said a woman came up to him a couple years ago and said she chose life for her child after hearing Silent Night while waiting for the abortionist to come into the room. As Abby Johnson, Former Planned Parenthood worker, once said, the most effective way to save babies is being present in front of abortion facilities because YOU are a baby’s last chance at life by reaching its mother.

Our second event every year happens on the second Saturday in December and is The Women’s Center annual Christmas party for their 700+clients and their families at Our Lady of Victory Parish. We help serve food and hand out gifts to children.

PLF 2Paige, the Director of Volunteer Services says “it is a very special day, seeing so many babies in one room who wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for the emotional, material/practical, and spiritual help offered to their mothers by The Women’s Center counselors and volunteers. It’s so touching to see these moms overcome obstacles and have their babies rather than abort them in a moment of crisis.”

Both events are so touching and give me hope for the future of America. Every year our events attract new volunteers who are ready to defend life in the womb and support children after birth. Our generation is the Pro-Life Future. Our generation will end abortion in our lifetime.

Merry Christmas.

Doing pro-life good this Christmas season

Christmas season is no time for slackers! Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably already been swept up into the unending demands of this time of year. But for Pro-Life Future’s young adults, busy doesn’t mean batty, and it doesn’t mean getting wrapped up the commercial clatter either.

For the Pro-Life Future chapters spread across the country from San Francisco to NYC, this is the time to stay focused saving lives, assisting mothers in crisis, and demonstrating how precious the gift of human life truly is.185941347

One of the ways multiple chapters kick into high-gear leading up to the holidays is in hosting Christmas Caroling at Clinics events. Boston, Chicago, Hartford, and Orange County are all packing gift bags filled with newborn gifts, and heading to abortion facilities around their city. This type of outreach saves lives every year, but it packs a double-holiday-punch, because the mix of peaceful caroling, joyful faces, and life-affirming conversations educate the greater community, and bring into focus the incalculable value of human life.  This is what the pro-life generation looks like!

And even the abortion facility workers see it — one chapter always brings gift cards into the waiting room of the downtown Planned Parenthood, where they turn the tables on the abortion industry, leaving pregnancy resource brochures tucked into waiting room chairs and magazines.

Meg, the president of the Chicago chapter, said at last years event, that “…the music even brought joy” and a new openness, “…to clinic workers, who actually skipped or danced to [some of our] songs”.

One of Pro-Life Future’s main missions is to engage unreached audiences and caroling is a great way to start.

Three Lit Candles

Other chapters have taken this season to volunteer at their local pregnancy resource center to wrap gifts for new mothers and young women who are targets of the abortion industry. In Orange County, the chapter has offered to hold a Gift Wrapping Drive, bringing in the whole community to wrap presents all evening. It’s a great way to show mothers with a concrete action that their lives, and their child’s lives, are a gift.

As a tree-topper as brilliant as a Christmas star though, NYC has married outreach, community education, and community outreach in a Christmas Party, featuring Gossip Girl star, Margaret Colin. They’ve used pop culture draw in fellow millennials, and made the event a benefit for Good Counsel Homes. Nothing could sum up the pro-life generation – and the spirit of joyful multi-tasking –  more than being able to educate a community about the value of preborn lives, support a home for pregnant mothers, and building a stronger team of pro-life young professionals!
